Hezbollah and Allies Secure Sweeping Victories in Bekaa, Baalbek-Hermel, and Beirut Municipal Elections
Report by Safarti Tarjuman International Desk
Hezbollah and the Amal Movement achieved significant success in Lebanon’s third phase of municipal and mayoral elections, sweeping the Bekaa and Baalbek-Hermel regions and claiming victories in Beirut, according to results announced on Monday.
Voting took place on Sunday in three governorates: Beirut, Bekaa, and Baalbek-Hermel. The next round is scheduled for May 24 in Nabatieh and South Lebanon.
Complete Sweep in Bekaa and Baalbek-Hermel
Hussein Al-Nemr, Hezbollah’s senior official in the Bekaa region, confirmed that all electoral lists backed by the party and its ally Amal Movement secured victories across the board. Speaking at a press conference in Baalbek, Al-Nemr said:
“Of the 80 municipal councils, 28 were elected uncontested, while 22 others were family-backed lists that received our support.”
He emphasized that the Baalbek contest was highly political, noting a victory margin of approximately 6,000 votes over rival candidates. Al-Nemr praised the people of Bekaa and Baalbek-Hermel for reaffirming their enduring commitment to the resistance.
“The resistance in Bekaa does not require a referendum — the people declared their stance over 40 years ago,” he stated.
MP Hussein Hajj Hasan, leader of the Baalbek-Hermel Alliance, echoed the sentiment, describing the results as a testament to the region’s loyalty and steadfastness.
Strong Performance in Beirut
In Beirut, Hezbollah and Amal Movement candidates also recorded victories, winning all contested municipal and mayoral seats, according to preliminary local media reports. Their joint electoral campaign, titled “Development and Loyalty,” thanked the capital’s voters for their responsible participation.
A broader coalition list, representing nearly all major political forces, captured all 24 seats in Beirut’s municipal council, maintaining the constitutionally required Christian-Muslim parity. This rare alliance included Hezbollah, Lebanese Forces, Amal Movement, Kataeb Party, Free Patriotic Movement, Tashnag, Hunchak, al-Ahbash, and MP Fouad Makhzoumi.
Political leaders described the cross-party collaboration as a temporary but necessary step to preserve sectarian balance in the capital.
Zahle: Lebanese Forces Score a Major Win
In Zahle, the Lebanese Forces (LF) achieved a notable victory, defeating a rival list backed by a coalition of other political forces and local families. The Free Patriotic Movement allowed its supporters to vote freely in the city.
LF leader Samir Geagea hailed the outcome as a “victory for progress, sovereignty, and national values.”
Voter Turnout Varies by Region
According to the official figures:
- Beirut: 21% turnout
- Zahle: 44.57%
- West Bekaa: 41.11%
- Rashaya: 37.70%
- Hermel: 34.15%
- Baalbek: 48.88%
A Hezbollah spokesperson confirmed wins in Baalbek, Hermel, and 19 additional towns across the Bekaa region.
Next Round of Voting
Lebanon now prepares for the fourth round of municipal elections on Saturday, May 24, covering Nabatieh and South Lebanon. These elections come amid a backdrop of economic hardship and political uncertainty, with the outcomes likely to influence the country’s evolving political dynamics.
