Zelenskiy Warns of 50,000 Russian Troops Amassed for Northern Ukraine Offensive

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has sounded the alarm over a significant Russian military buildup near Ukraine’s northern border, revealing that 50,000 Russian troops have gathered near the Sumy region.

Zelenskiy said the massing of troops across the border in Russia’s Kursk region signals preparations for a potential large-scale summer offensive. However, he emphasized that Ukraine has already taken defensive steps to counter any sudden assault.

“Their largest and most powerful forces are now positioned along the Kursk front,” Zelenskiy stated on Tuesday. “Russia’s goal is to push our troops from the area and advance on the Sumy region.”

The president said Moscow appears intent on establishing a 10-kilometer buffer zone along the border. This aligns with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s repeated calls for a “buffer area” to shield Russia from perceived security threats.

Russia has reportedly seized at least four border villages in the region in recent weeks and continues to push forward on the eastern front, including near the city of Kostyantynivka. However, Zelenskiy reported that Ukrainian forces have managed to push Russian troops back by approximately 4 kilometers in that area over the past 48 hours.

While Kyiv awaits a memorandum from Moscow detailing its terms for possible ceasefire negotiations, diplomatic progress has stalled. Talks in Istanbul two weeks ago failed to produce a truce, despite Ukraine, the US, and European allies pushing for peace.

Zelenskiy confirmed he will attend the next G7 summit at the invitation of Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney. He also plans to participate in the upcoming European Union summit as part of Ukraine’s ongoing diplomatic outreach.

Highlighting the need for self-reliance, Zelenskiy said Ukraine aims to secure $30 billion to fully fund its rapidly growing domestic arms production capacity.

“We must ensure Ukraine’s defense sector is fully equipped to support our military needs in the long term,” he stated.

The situation along Ukraine’s northern and eastern borders remains tense as Russia increases military pressure while diplomatic solutions remain out of reach.
