KYIV, — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy announced a significant military reshuffle on Tuesday, appointing Major General Mykhailo Drapatyi to lead the Joint Forces Command days after his resignation following a deadly Russian attack on a training site.
In his nightly video address, President Zelenskiy explained that the leadership overhaul was aimed at maintaining a sharp combat focus within Ukraine’s military, now more than three years into Russia’s full-scale invasion. The reshuffle followed a high-level command meeting addressing strategic battlefield developments.
Major General Drapatyi had previously submitted his resignation as commander of Ukraine’s land forces after a fatal Russian strike on a military training area. However, Zelenskiy chose to reassign him, citing his combat experience and leadership under pressure. Drapatyi will now serve as Commander of the Joint Forces, focusing solely on frontline operations.
The president also confirmed the appointments of several key military figures:
- Oleh Apostol as Commander of the Paratroopers
- Robert Brovdi as Commander of Unmanned Systems
- Vadym Sukharevskyi as Commander of the Eastern Operational Command, with a mission to modernize the unit
- Ihor Skybiuk as Deputy Chief of the General Staff
Zelenskiy emphasized that these appointments were designed to replicate the combat effectiveness of Ukraine’s most successful brigades across the armed forces.
In a Facebook post, Drapatyi confirmed his continued service and commitment to Ukraine’s defense. “The president listened, supported, and urged me to focus on the most critical priorities — the war, the front, and victory,” he wrote.
