MADRID — Tens of thousands of demonstrators gathered in Madrid’s Plaza de España on Sunday to protest against Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez’s government, calling for immediate elections as multiple corruption investigations engulf his administration and family.
Organized by the opposition conservative People’s Party (PP), the rally carried the slogan “Mafia or Democracy” and drew between 45,000 and 50,000 people, according to official estimates. However, event organizers claimed over 100,000 attended, voicing discontent with the ruling Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE).
PP leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo led the rally, calling for an end to what he described as political deceit. “Spain needs a revolution of decency and freedom,” he declared. “Call an election — we want one now, because no one voted for this.”
Protesters held banners reading “Sánchez traitor” and “Government resign,” voicing outrage over a string of corruption investigations involving figures close to the prime minister.
The ruling Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) is under intense scrutiny. Begoña Gómez, the prime minister’s wife, is being investigated for alleged influence peddling tied to her academic work. The complaint was filed by far-right-linked group Manos Limpias, which Sánchez denounced as politically motivated.
Sánchez’s brother, David Sánchez, also faces trial for alleged influence peddling, while former transport minister José Luis Ábalos is entangled in a separate scandal involving pandemic-era mask contracts.
Leire Díaz, a former PSOE member, is accused of attempting to discredit the Guardia Civil unit investigating the prime minister’s family. She denies acting on behalf of the party or Sánchez.
The government dismissed Sunday’s protest as a diversion tactic by the PP, which is also facing multiple investigations. Madrid regional president Isabel Díaz Ayuso is under pressure over the handling of COVID-19 in care homes and her partner’s alleged tax fraud linked to face mask imports.
