IAEA Confirms Israeli Strikes Damaged Underground Centrifuge Halls at Iran’s Natanz Facility

VIENNA — The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has confirmed that Israeli airstrikes caused direct damage to underground centrifuge halls at Iran’s Natanz nuclear facility, in the most significant attack on Iran’s nuclear infrastructure in years.

According to the UN nuclear watchdog, high-resolution satellite imagery revealed structural impacts following a series of strikes launched by Israel five days ago, targeting Iran’s military and nuclear assets.

This is the first time the IAEA has verified that underground components of the Natanz site — a critical element of Iran’s uranium enrichment program — were directly impacted by military strikes.

“Based on continued analysis of satellite data obtained after Friday’s attacks, the IAEA has identified additional elements indicating direct impacts on the underground enrichment halls at Natanz,” the agency said in a statement on Tuesday.

The IAEA previously confirmed the destruction of an above-ground enrichment building and vital electrical systems that powered centrifuge operations. The new damage assessment suggests deeper infrastructural disruption to Iran’s nuclear capabilities.

Natanz is one of the most heavily fortified nuclear facilities in the country, often cited by Western powers as a central element of Iran’s nuclear ambitions.

The confirmed strike comes amid heightened regional conflict following Israel’s expanded military campaign targeting Iran, which began on June 13 after a series of escalations between the two longtime adversaries.

Iran has yet to provide a detailed response to the IAEA findings but has accused Israel of violating international law and has vowed retaliation.
