ANKARA — Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has described Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as the “greatest threat to the region’s security”, according to a statement posted on social media by the Turkish Presidency.

During a phone conversation with the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, President Erdogan strongly condemned Israel’s actions and reiterated his sharp criticism of Netanyahu, especially in the context of the ongoing war in Gaza.

Erdogan emphasized that the escalating tensions between Israel and Iran should not distract the international community from the grave humanitarian crisis in Gaza. He called the situation there a “genocide”, urging the world to remain focused on protecting Palestinian civilians.

“The Israel-Iran conflict cannot overshadow the humanitarian crisis and genocide in Gaza,” Erdogan stated during the call, according to the Turkish Presidency.

Erdogan and the Emir of Qatar reportedly discussed the importance of a coordinated diplomatic strategy to restore regional stability and address humanitarian needs in Gaza. Turkey and Qatar have both advocated for increased international pressure on Israel to halt its military operations.

This latest condemnation underscores Turkey’s increasingly assertive role in Middle East diplomacy, particularly its opposition to Netanyahu’s policies, which Erdogan claims are destabilizing the entire region.
