MAKKAH –In a grand spiritual tradition, Saudi Arabia has unveiled the 2025 Kiswah of the Holy Kaaba, an intricately crafted silk covering weighing 1,415 kilograms and valued at 25 million Saudi Riyals. The unveiling ceremony coincided with the first day of Muharram 1447 AH, symbolizing the beginning of the new Islamic year.
Produced at the King Abdulaziz Complex for the Kaaba Kiswah, the sacred cloth took 11 months to complete and reflects a combination of religious reverence, artisanal mastery, and meticulous craftsmanship.
The 2025 Kiswah includes:
- 825 kg of pure black natural silk
- 120 kg of gold-coated thread
- 60 kg of silver thread
- 47 individual silk panels, all handwoven
A total of 68 verses from the Holy Qur’an, including the names of Allah and key declarations of Islamic faith, have been intricately embroidered in gold and silver thread, adorning the black silk exterior. The layers beneath include green silk lining for harmony, red silk for spiritual warmth, and cotton for structural strength.
The spiritual ceremony to change the Kiswah was held today at the Masjid al-Haram, coinciding with the sighting of the Muharram moon for 1447 AH. Pilgrims continued performing Tawaf as the old Kiswah was removed after Asr prayer on 29th Dhul Hijjah, and the new Kiswah was draped over the Kaaba in the early hours of 1st Muharram.
This annual tradition marks not only the beginning of the Islamic calendar but also reflects the Kingdom’s enduring commitment to preserving and honoring the sacred heritage of Islam.
Crafted under the supervision of expert calligraphers, weavers, and designers, the Kiswah not only represents sacred art but also Saudi Arabia’s continued investment in preserving Islamic heritage. Every stitch and verse serves as a reminder of the deep-rooted spiritual values held by over a billion Muslims around the world.
