ISLAMABAD — The Ethiopian Embassy in Islamabad and the United Nations Pakistan have agreed to collaborate on international outreach and mobilization for the 2nd United Nations Food Systems Summit Stocktake, to be held from July 27 to 29, 2025, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
The coordination was finalized during a high-level meeting between Dr. Jemal Beker Abdula, Ethiopia’s Ambassador to Pakistan and Special Envoy, and Mr. Mohamed Yahya, the UN Resident Coordinator in Pakistan.
Ambassador Dr. Jemal outlined the extensive preparations underway in Addis Ababa, highlighting Ethiopia’s commitment to hosting a successful summit. Co-hosted by Ethiopia and Italy, the summit aims to assess global progress, build stronger partnerships, and foster innovation for inclusive and resilient food systems.
“The summit is a vital opportunity to promote collaborative action on climate-smart agriculture, food equity, and sustainable growth,” said the Ambassador, inviting Pakistan to play a leading role in global food governance.
Ambassador Jemal shared details of key Ethiopian initiatives spearheaded by Prime Minister Dr. Abiy Ahmed, such as:
* Green Legacy Initiative – a massive national reforestation campaign
* Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) – promoting sustainable energy and irrigation
* Bounty of Basket Program – enhancing local food production and self-reliance
These efforts, he noted, are integral to Ethiopia’s national development vision and contribute to the **UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The two officials discussed the strengthening bilateral ties between Ethiopia and Pakistan, particularly in climate adaptation, green development, and food systems reform. Both sides agreed that Pakistan’s active participation in the Addis Ababa summit would reinforce South-South cooperation and global food solidarity.
Commending Ethiopia’s leadership, UN Coordinator Mohamed Yahya expressed appreciation for the country’s contributions to reforestation, climate resilience, and multilateral engagement.
He reaffirmed the UN’s full backing for Ethiopia’s hosting of the summit and assured the Ambassador of Pakistan’s continued collaboration in ensuring the event’s success.
“Ethiopia has emerged as a credible voice in global food and environmental diplomacy,” Mr. Yahya remarked, praising Addis Ababa’s role in convening international forums aimed at shaping a better future for vulnerable communities.
The collaboration between the Ethiopian Embassy and UN Pakistan marks a significant step toward international unity on food systems transformation and climate resilience. As the world looks to Addis Ababa this July, Ethiopia’s leadership is poised to elevate global commitments to ending hunger, supporting smallholder farmers, and ensuring sustainable food for future generations.
