ISLAMABAD — Pakistan has been re-elected to the Executive Council of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for the 2025–2027 term.
The elections took place during the 33rd Session of the IOC General Assembly, held at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris from June 25 to July 2, 2025. Pakistan’s delegation was led by Ambassador and Permanent Delegate to UNESCO, Mumtaz Zahra Baloch, according to a press release.
The IOC promotes international cooperation in marine science to enhance the sustainable management of oceans, coasts, and marine resources. It supports the development of scientific services to foster sustainable ocean economies, alongside advancing effective warning systems and preparedness for tsunamis and other ocean-related hazards. The Commission also coordinates the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021–2030, known as the Ocean Decade.
Pakistan’s re-election reflects its constructive role and positive contributions to ocean-related scientific initiatives under UNESCO. The Executive Council convenes annually to review progress on the Commission’s ongoing work plan and issues scheduled for the General Assembly.
