KYIV — Russia has carried out one of the largest and most devastating assaults of the war, launching more than 550 drones and ballistic missiles on Ukraine’s capital Kyiv, just hours after Russian President Vladimir Putin held a phone conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy denounced the seven-hour attack as a “deliberate act of terror,” accusing Moscow of “publicly humiliating” Trump following their call. He argued the massive overnight offensive showed “how Moscow interprets diplomacy” and said the timing was no coincidence.
The sustained night-time attack forced thousands of families into underground shelters, metro stations, and basements. The terrifying bombardment ended around 9 a.m. local time.
At least 23 civilians were injured, 14 of whom were hospitalized, local officials confirmed. The assault caused significant damage to apartment blocks, vehicles, and storage facilities, while fires raged across several districts.
The attack also disrupted Kyiv’s railway system, closing the main station concourse and forcing passengers to exit through underground tunnels. Rail services were delayed across the network on Friday.
After speaking with Putin on Thursday, Trump acknowledged to reporters that “no progress” had been made toward a ceasefire, saying Moscow remained adamant about Ukraine’s unconditional surrender.
Meanwhile, the Pentagon’s recent suspension of some weapons deliveries — including key Patriot missile interceptors — has raised concerns in Ukraine about the country’s ability to defend its cities against escalating Russian strikes.
While Ukraine has refrained from directly criticizing the U.S. president, Zelenskyy has urged Washington, the EU, and the UK to take stronger action, including providing more air defense systems and imposing tougher sanctions on Moscow.
“There must be consequences — not eventually, but now,” Zelenskyy said. “Strengthened sanctions, immediate delivery of air defence systems, and a shift from caution to clarity. The Kremlin is watching the world’s reaction. So are others.”
Zelenskyy expressed hope of holding further talks with Trump on Friday to push for renewed military aid, but expectations of any major shift in U.S. policy remain limited.
