LONDON — Pakistan’s High Commissioner to the UK, Dr. Mohammad Faisal, met with Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland to explore deeper cooperation in trade and emerging technologies, particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI).

During the meeting held in London on Wednesday, both officials emphasized the potential of strengthening intra-Commonwealth trade networks. With 56 member countries and a population of over 2.5 billion, the Commonwealth represents a significant opportunity for Pakistan to diversify its export markets and enhance its economic footprint globally.

Dr. Faisal highlighted Pakistan’s commitment to revitalizing its trade strategy through multilateral platforms and exploring regional synergies within the Commonwealth framework.

A major highlight of the conversation was the growing role of Artificial Intelligence in shaping governance, education, and development across Commonwealth nations. Both sides acknowledged the urgent need for structured frameworks and responsible AI adoption to ensure that innovation leads to inclusive benefits for citizens.

The discussion underscored Pakistan’s interest in building digital capacity, sharing best practices, and participating in knowledge exchange initiatives under Commonwealth-led programs.

The meeting aligns with Pakistan’s broader economic and diplomatic goals of tech-driven development and trade diversification. As the country faces economic challenges and seeks sustainable growth, collaboration with the Commonwealth presents new avenues for market access, capacity building, and innovation partnerships.

Experts see this engagement as a timely step to position Pakistan as an active regional player and a responsible contributor to global conversations around AI governance and digital cooperation.

The Commonwealth of Nations is a voluntary association of 56 independent countries, many of which share historical ties to the former British Empire. Spanning Africa, Asia, the Americas, Europe, and the Pacific, the Commonwealth promotes mutual cooperation in areas such as trade, democracy, education, and sustainability.

High-level dialogues like this one foster cross-border collaboration and enable member states to align on global challenges through shared values and strategic partnerships.
