KUALA LUMPUR — Foreign ministers at the 15th East Asia Summit (EAS) in Malaysia have pledged deeper collaboration on political, security, and economic challenges, agreeing to finalize and adopt key declarations aimed at enhancing regional stability later this year

The 15th EAS convened in Kuala Lumpur alongside the 58th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting, drawing representatives from 18 member states. Participants reaffirmed their shared commitment to addressing evolving regional dynamics through dialogue and cooperation.

Officials highlighted pressing geopolitical and economic challenges, underscoring the need for coordinated responses that strengthen strategic partnerships across the Asia-Pacific.

A major outcome of this year’s summit was agreement to prepare critical declarations for formal adoption in October 2025. These declarations are expected to outline shared commitments on political security, economic development, and regional cooperation.

The move signals a united front among EAS members—whose combined economies represent roughly half of global GDP, estimated at over US$68 trillion—highlighting the summit’s significance as a platform for collective action.

Malaysia’s Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohammad Hassan welcomed broad support for Malaysia’s goals as ASEAN Chair in 2025. He emphasized the country’s dedication to peace, diplomacy, and international law, noting these principles are essential for sustainable regional cooperation.

Malaysia also underscored ASEAN’s central role in fostering dialogue, stability, and economic integration among EAS members

The EAS serves as a vital platform for addressing political, security, and economic issues that shape the future of the East Asian and Indo-Pacific regions, promoting inclusive cooperation and long-term stability.
