Russia Strikes Western Ukraine in Large-Scale Assault

KYIV – Russia unleashed a massive aerial bombardment on Ukraine overnight, targeting multiple western cities in its fourth major strike this month. At least two civilians were killed in Chernivtsi, a city close to the Romanian border, and over 20 others were injured.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described the attack as one of the most intense in weeks, warning that only decisive international action can halt Moscow’s campaign of terror.

According to Ukraine’s air force, Russia fired 597 drones and 26 missiles in the assault. Ukrainian defences shot down 25 of those missiles and 319 Shahed drones, while electronic warfare units jammed another 258 drones.

“Russia’s relentless air attacks demand immediate and tough sanctions,” Zelenskyy urged on Telegram.
“This war can be stopped only through strength. We need not just words from our partners, but real actions that save lives.”

The strikes caused widespread damage across western regions traditionally considered safer from Russian bombardment. Cities hit included Lviv, Lutsk, and Chernivtsi.

In Chernivtsi, local governor Ruslan Zaparaniuk confirmed a 26-year-old woman and a 43-year-old man were killed when drones and a missile hit residential neighborhoods.

In Lviv, near the Polish border, Mayor Andriy Sadovyi reported that 46 residential buildings, a university, the local courthouse, and around 20 business premises were damaged.

“Windows shattered. Curtains torn down. The entire apartment covered in glass,” said 64-year-old resident Oleh Sidorov.
“I don’t even know how I’ll sleep tonight with no windows left.”

The UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine reported that June was the deadliest month for civilians in three years of full-scale war, recording 232 deaths and 1,343 injuries.

Russia has significantly escalated its aerial offensive since June, using large-scale drone and missile strikes to overwhelm Ukrainian air defences

Analysts warn the intensifying air campaign signals Moscow’s intent to break Ukrainian resolve and test Western support. Kyiv continues to call for advanced air defence systems and stronger sanctions to halt Russia’s assault on civilian infrastructure.
