Syria’s Sharaa Condemns Israeli Airstrikes, Accuses Tel Aviv of Spreading Regional Chaos

Damascus — Veteran Syrian political figure Farouk al-Sharaa has fiercely condemned Israel following a series of Israeli airstrikes that reportedly killed 15 members of Syria’s Defense and Interior Ministries, accusing Tel Aviv of seeking to destabilize the region and ignite “chaos and destruction

According to the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, at least 15 members of Syria’s Interior and Defense Ministries were killed in the Israeli strikes that targeted military and intelligence sites near Damascus and Sweida late Tuesday night.

In a televised statement, Sharaa — a long-serving figure in the Syrian regime — declared that Syria will not be intimidated by external aggression:

“We are not among those who fear war. Our priority is to protect our citizens, especially the Druze communities in the south, who are facing repeated violations of sovereignty.”

He added that Israel’s attacks were part of a broader strategy aimed at “undermining regional stability and dragging Syria into further confrontation.”

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have not officially commented on the strikes. However, regional military analysts say the targeted sites are believed to be connected to Iranian proxy groups and Hezbollah units embedded within Syria’s military infrastructure.

The Observatory reported explosions across several locations, including air defense installations and military command centers, resulting in “one of the deadliest Israeli attacks this year” on Syrian soil.

The strikes come amid heightened regional tensions, with Israel stepping up preemptive actions to thwart what it describes as growing threats from Iranian entrenchment in Syria. Tel Aviv maintains it reserves the right to strike Iranian-backed targets that pose a threat to Israeli national security.

Damascus, in response, has escalated its rhetoric and vowed retaliation “at a time and place of its choosing.”

Sharaa highlighted the importance of safeguarding Syria’s Druze minority, many of whom reside in Sweida — an area increasingly caught in the crosshairs of regional conflict.

“These are loyal citizens of Syria, and we will not allow their safety to be compromised by foreign aggression or internal instability,” he said.

Local reports indicate several Druze villages were shaken by the blasts, but there were no civilian casualties reported as of Wednesday morning.
