Ukraine — A Ukrainian Mirage 2000 fighter jet crashed in the western Volyn Region on Monday evening after experiencing an in-flight technical malfunction, the Ukrainian Air Force confirmed in an official statement.
The pilot successfully ejected from the aircraft and survived the incident, which occurred during a routine flight mission, according to the Air Force update shared via its Telegram channel.
The Dassault Mirage 2000, a French multi-role combat aircraft, was transferred to Ukraine earlier this year as part of Western military support. In February 2025, French Defense Minister Sébastien Lecornu confirmed the handover of several jets to Kyiv, although the exact number was not disclosed. Independent reports suggest Ukraine received up to six Mirage 2000 fighters.
Russian officials have previously dismissed the strategic value of such Western aircraft. Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated that foreign-supplied warplanes “will not alter the outcome of the conflict” and warned they would be “consistently destroyed” by Russian forces.
The crash is expected to renew debate over the operational reliability of aging aircraft in Ukraine’s arsenal and the broader logistical challenges of maintaining advanced Western equipment amid ongoing conflict.
