Israeli Gunfire Kills Dozens in Gaza as Civilians Await Aid

GAZA CITY – At least 30 Palestinians were killed and hundreds more injured after Israeli forces allegedly opened fire on civilians awaiting humanitarian assistance in northern Gaza, according to the Hamas-affiliated Gaza Civil Defence Agency.

Spokesperson Mahmud Bassal reported that the victims had gathered to receive aid when the shooting occurred near Gaza City, with at least 300 people wounded. The incident unfolded approximately three kilometers southwest of the Zikim aid crossing, one of the main humanitarian entry points into the blockaded territory.

“At least 30 were killed and 300 injured while trying to collect food,” Bassal told AFP.

In response, the Israeli military stated that it was unaware of any such casualties, distancing itself from the reported violence.

Meanwhile, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) expressed grave concern over the deteriorating situation, emphasizing that Israel’s tactical pauses in combat operations have failed to alleviate widespread hunger and malnutrition in the enclave.

“Despite temporary ceasefires, people are still dying from starvation and being injured while seeking basic aid,” said an OCHA spokesperson.

Dr. Mohammed Abu Salmiya, head of Al-Shifa Hospital, confirmed that 35 bodies were brought in after the attack.

Amid the escalating crisis, US special envoy Steve Witkoff is set to arrive in Israel on Thursday in a renewed diplomatic push to revive stalled ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas.

Witkoff has been actively engaged in indirect talks, previously hosted in Doha, Qatar. However, discussions were suspended last week after both U.S. and Israeli delegations abruptly withdrew.

The alleged shooting comes amid a deepening humanitarian catastrophe in Gaza, where access to food, clean water, and medical care remains extremely limited. Aid convoys are struggling to reach northern areas due to ongoing hostilities and infrastructure damage.

Video footage circulating on social media shows desperate civilians scrambling for supplies, highlighting the urgent need for a sustained ceasefire.

International calls for a two-state solution and a long-term peace framework are growing louder, but political divisions continue to hinder meaningful progress.
