Pope Leo XIV Urges Catholic Youth at Jubilee in Rome to Embrace Faith and Justice

Rome – Pope Leo XIV addressed a sea of over hundreds of thousands of young Catholics at Tor Vergata, Rome, urging them to lead lives rooted in faith, justice, and compassion. The event marked the largest public appearance of his papacy to date and formed part of the Jubilee of Youth, under the ongoing Catholic Holy Year 2025.

Waving from his white popemobile, the pope was met with cheers, waving flags, and emotional prayers from attendees representing more than 146 nations. Many had gathered before dawn and braved the summer heat to witness the historic vigil.

Participants, many of whom wore colorful bandanas under the 30°C (86°F) sun, were cooled off by water cannons as they waited for the pope’s arrival. Some had camped out overnight, planning to remain at the site until Sunday morning, when Pope Leo is scheduled to celebrate a mass at the same location.

“This is an unforgettable experience,” said Maya Remorini, a pilgrim from Italy’s Tuscany region. “We arrived around 5 a.m. just to feel this spiritual connection.”

This weekend’s youth gathering forms part of the Catholic Church’s Holy Year, which began in late 2024 and has so far brought over 17 million pilgrims to Rome. The Jubilee of Youth aims to renew the church’s connection with younger generations through worship, solidarity, and spiritual growth.

Pope Leo XIV, the first American-born pontiff, was elected on May 8, 2025, following the death of Pope Francis. His early days in office have focused on youth outreach, interfaith dialogue, and justice-driven service.
