TEL AVIV / GAZA / WASHINGTON — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened a high-level national security meeting Tuesday, reportedly leaning toward a full military occupation of Gaza, according to Israeli media. The strategy shift comes as the death toll approaches 61,000 civilians and starvation claims more lives, with no resolution in sight.

Security officials presented options to Netanyahu during a nearly three-hour session, with Defense Minister Israel Katz and Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer joining Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir. The discussion sets the stage for a cabinet-level decision anticipated Thursday evening.

Despite intense international pressure for a ceasefire, domestic talks have collapsed. Doctors report eight new deaths from starvation in the past 24 hours, while Gaza’s Health Ministry confirmed 119 additional fatalities from strikes and gunfire, including civilians waiting for aid.

Global watchdogs warn of escalating famine conditions across refugee centers and hospitals.

Tensions with Palestinian religious authorities also escalated this week after Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben‑Gvir publicly prayed at the Al‑Aqsa Mosque—the first serving Israeli minister to do so—prompting ire from Jordan and international actors.

The UN described occupation plans as deeply alarming, warning of irreversible humanitarian consequences. While the U.S. State Department declined to confirm Israeli intentions, special envoy Steve Witkoff and President Trump held talks to ramp up humanitarian assistance to Gaza.

Residents in Gaza’s remaining uncontrolled quarter report extreme fear:

“If the tanks push forward, where will we go? Into the sea?” said Abu Jehad, a local wood merchant. “This would be a death sentence.”

Continuing protests in the occupied West Bank reflect growing despair, with demonstrators decrying mass detention and the starvation of Gaza’s population.

Since the conflict ignited on October 7, 2023, following a Hamas attack killing 1,200 Israelis and kidnapping 251 hostages, Israel has launched a large-scale assault on Gaza that has displaced nearly all residents and triggered intense global scrutiny.

While far-right elements support annexation, Israel’s military leadership has so far resisted integration of the territory, citing resource strain and long-term destabilization.
