New York — The United Nations has sounded the alarm over reports that Israel is considering a full-scale military occupation of the Gaza Strip, warning such a move could lead to devastating consequences and further destabilize the region.
Speaking during a UN Security Council session on the worsening situation in Gaza, UN Assistant Secretary-General Miroslav Jenča described the reported Israeli intentions as “deeply alarming” and warned that they could severely impact the lives of the remaining hostages still held in the enclave.
“Such an escalation would risk catastrophic consequences,” said Jenča. “It would further endanger the hostages and aggravate the humanitarian crisis already gripping Gaza.”
Jenča reiterated that Gaza is and must remain an integral part of a future Palestinian state, as per international law and long-standing global consensus on the two-state solution. He urged all stakeholders to uphold the principles of international law and refrain from actions that could derail peace efforts in the region.
The warning comes as tensions rise amid reports that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is considering military strategies aimed at full territorial control of Gaza following the collapse of ceasefire negotiations with Hamas.
The United Nations stressed that any plans to expand Israeli operations across the entire Gaza Strip could lead to more civilian casualties, exacerbate the humanitarian disaster, and risk further escalation across the Middle East.
“The global community must intervene immediately to prevent further bloodshed and ensure the protection of civilian lives and infrastructure,” Jenča added.
He emphasized the importance of a diplomatic path forward, calling on both parties to de-escalate and prioritize humanitarian access and the release of hostages.
