WASHINGTON — U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed his willingness to meet with both Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in a renewed push to end the ongoing war in Ukraine.
The proposed meetings, which could include a rare three-way summit, follow what Trump described as “highly productive” discussions in Moscow between his envoy Steve Witkoff and top Russian officials. The Kremlin also labeled the talks as constructive, raising hopes of a potential diplomatic breakthrough.
Reports from The New York Times and CNN, citing sources close to the discussions, indicate that Trump is planning not only a bilateral meeting with Putin but is also pushing for a three-way summit involving Zelensky.
The proposal was reportedly discussed in a recent conference call that included Trump, Zelensky, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, and leaders from the UK, Germany, and Finland. The goal, sources say, is to chart a potential roadmap for a ceasefire agreement and broader peace framework.
Despite growing anticipation, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated Wednesday that no official date has been confirmed for the Trump-Putin meeting, and the two leaders have not yet scheduled a direct call.
> “There is interest, but key logistics and conditions are still being assessed,” Rubio said.
On his Truth Social platform, Trump celebrated the outcome of Witkoff’s Moscow visit:
“Great progress was made! I’ve already briefed some of our European allies.”
The announcement comes just days before Trump’s self-imposed deadline for imposing new sanctions on Russia if no meaningful peace progress is made.
