Jerusalem — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu clarified on Friday that Israel’s objective in Gaza is not territorial control, but the removal of Hamas and the creation of conditions for a peaceful, stable government in the enclave.
Speaking with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz during a phone conversation, Netanyahu emphasized that Israel’s military operations are focused on dismantling Hamas’ influence, not on permanently taking over Gaza.
According to a statement released by the Prime Minister’s Office on the social media platform X, Netanyahu told Merz:
“Our mission is to free Gaza from the grip of Hamas and open the way for a peaceful administration that serves the people of Gaza.”
During the call, Netanyahu expressed disappointment over Berlin’s recent decision to halt weapons exports to Israel, a move that has drawn both domestic and international attention.
Germany’s suspension came amid heightened global concern over the humanitarian situation in Gaza and escalating calls for restraint in military operations. Netanyahu, however, stressed that weakening Israel’s defense capabilities could embolden militant groups and prolong the conflict.
The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas has drawn widespread diplomatic engagement, with world leaders balancing calls for humanitarian protection against the need to address security threats.
While Netanyahu’s remarks sought to counter perceptions of an Israeli occupation plan, international skepticism remains, particularly as military operations continue in densely populated areas of Gaza.
