Birmingham, UK — The “Spirit of Pakistan” festival, a week-long celebration marking Pakistan’s Independence Day, officially began in Birmingham with an impressive inauguration led by Dr. Mohammad Faisal, High Commissioner of Pakistan to the UK, alongside his spouse Dr. Sarah Naeem.

“Spirit of Pakistan” week-long Independence Day festivities start in Birmingham

Organized by the Pakistan Consulate General in Birmingham, the event runs from August 8 to 15 and aims to showcase the rich cultural heritage and remarkable achievements of British Pakistanis, while also paying tribute to Pakistan’s armed forces and celebrating the success of Operation Bunyanum Marsoos.

The grand opening ceremony was attended by a distinguished lineup, including Baroness Shaista Gohir OBE, Paulette Hamilton MP, Tahir Ali MP, Ayoub Khan MP, former MP Khalid Mehmood, Lord Mayor of Birmingham Zafar Iqbal MBE, festival chair Councillor Waseem Zafar MBE, Mayor of West Midlands Richard Parker, and Professor David Mba, Vice Chancellor of Birmingham City University. Community leaders, diplomats, entrepreneurs, and hundreds of members of the Pakistani diaspora also joined the festivities.

In his keynote address, Dr. Faisal highlighted the unity of the Pakistani diaspora and their role in strengthening integration within the UK’s social fabric. He emphasized that the festival not only celebrates cultural heritage but also honors the services and contributions of over 1.7 million British Pakistanis — the UK’s second-largest ethnic minority group — who excel in business, politics, education, and public service.

British parliamentarians and community leaders commended the positive impact of British Pakistanis and urged collective efforts to counter misinformation targeting ethnic minorities.

The “Spirit of Pakistan” week features an array of vibrant activities, including art exhibitions, live music performances, sports events, and cultural showcases — all designed to reflect the energy and creativity of the Pakistani community in the UK.
