Jerusalem — Zvi Sukkot, a Knesset member from the Religious Zionism party, has warned that Israel’s coalition government could face collapse if it fails to adopt a more aggressive military plan for Gaza.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Sukkot cautioned that abandoning the war’s core objectives would endanger Israel’s security. If this is the situation, in my humble opinion we need to go to elections,” he wrote.
Sukkot’s comments follow sharp criticism from Religious Zionism party leader and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who expressed growing doubts about Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s willingness to secure a decisive victory. In a video message on Friday night, Smotrich dismissed the security cabinet’s recently approved plan to capture Gaza City as a “half-measure” that falls short of defeating Hamas.
Previously, Smotrich had said he was willing to set aside concerns because he believed the government was committed to a clear path toward victory. However, he now states, “I have lost faith that the prime minister is able and wants to lead the IDF to a decisive victory.”
According to Israel’s public broadcaster Kan, Smotrich directly threatened to bring down the government during Thursday’s cabinet meeting, saying, “From my perspective we can stop everything and let the people decide.”
These escalating statements highlight deepening divisions within the ruling coalition over Israel’s Gaza policy. While some cabinet members push for complete military control over the enclave, others caution that such an approach could worsen the humanitarian crisis and strain Israel’s diplomatic relations.
