Trump Extends U.S.-China Tariff Truce by 90 Days

Washington — U.S. President Donald Trump has signed an executive order extending the current tariff truce with China for another 90 days, delaying major duty hikes and easing trade tensions ahead of the critical holiday shopping season.

The extension, effective until mid-November, prevents U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods from rising to 145% and Chinese duties on American products from climbing to 125%. Without this move, analysts warned the two nations risked entering a near-complete trade freeze.

Key Tariff Levels Remain Unchanged

  • U.S. tariffs on Chinese imports remain at 30%
  • Chinese tariffs on U.S. goods stay at 10%

The White House said the delay gives negotiators more time to work toward a long-term agreement while allowing U.S. retailers to import electronics, apparel, and toys for the Christmas season at lower rates.

Speaking at a press conference, Trump said he maintains a “good relationship” with Chinese President Xi Jinping, adding, “We’ll see what happens.” On Sunday, he also urged China to quadruple its purchases of U.S. soybeans, though no confirmation came from Beijing.

Trade analysts view the move as a strategic pause. “It shows both sides are creating space for potential progress, possibly setting the stage for a Trump-Xi meeting this fall,” said Wendy Cutler, vice president at the Asia Society Policy Institute and a former U.S. trade negotiator.

Last week, Trump told CNBC that negotiations were “very close” to concluding successfully. He added that if a deal is finalized, he plans to meet Xi before the end of 2025.

Experts note that this truce not only shields U.S. consumers from price hikes but also signals a mutual de-escalation strategy in the long-running trade dispute.
