Kyiv — Ukraine’s Ministry of Defence has announced a major budget increase for frontline brigades, granting 7 million Ukrainian hryvnias (about $170,000) per battalion to cover urgent operational needs, including drones and tactical equipment.
The new funding structure will scale based on the number of battalions actively deployed, meaning some brigades could receive tens of millions of hryvnias in additional support.
Defence Minister Denys Shmyhal said the budget boost follows an urgent meeting of the ministry’s budget commission, which approved the reallocation of funds to accelerate frontline readiness.
“The General Staff is finalizing the list of units, and our goal is to transfer the funds as quickly as possible,” Shmyhal stated.
The increased budget will primarily support the procurement of combat drones, surveillance equipment, and other mission-critical supplies.
The funding announcement comes as Russian forces intensify operations in eastern Ukraine, making rapid advances in the Donetsk region. According to military reports, Russian troops have moved approximately 10 kilometers (6 miles) deeper into Ukrainian-held territory, pressing into the Kucheriv Yar sector.
The battlefield developments coincide with renewed diplomatic maneuvering. Last week, US President Donald Trump confirmed plans to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in an attempt to negotiate a ceasefire, hinting at possible territorial concessions.
However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has firmly rejected any agreement involving land concessions, reiterating Kyiv’s stance that Ukraine will not cede territory. European leaders have also urged that Ukraine be included in all peace negotiations between Washington and Moscow.
