Peshawar / Gilgit / Muzaffarabad — Catastrophic monsoon rains, flash floods, and landslides have left at least 330 people dead across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), and Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK). Authorities fear the death toll may rise as rescue operations continue in the worst-hit districts.
In Buner district, devastating cloudbursts and floods swept through entire villages, killing at least 213 people, while dozens remain missing. Emergency officials reported that floodwaters destroyed homes, submerged farmland, and swept away livestock and vehicles.
In Mansehra, 20 people died due to landslides and flash floods, while 21 more lives were lost in Bajaur following a deadly cloudburst. The situation in Swat is equally alarming as raging rivers entered Mingora city, washing away communication bridges and inundating residential areas.
Widespread Destruction in AJK and Gilgit-Baltistan
- In Neelum Valley (AJK), six key bridges collapsed, cutting off multiple villages. At least 11 people were confirmed dead, while in Muzaffarabad, a cloudburst claimed eight lives, including six members of one family.
- In Gilgit-Baltistan, five major bridges in Skardu were destroyed, while floods in Chilas’ Uchhar Nallah left 10 people dead.
The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) in KP confirmed 307 deaths so far, with 23 injured and at least 74 houses destroyed across Swat, Buner, Bajaur, Mansehra, Shangla, Torghar, and Battagram.
On the directives of the Chief Minister of KP, Rs 500 million in relief funds has been allocated to the most affected districts, including:
- Rs 150 million for Buner
- Rs 100 million each for Bajaur, Mansehra, and Battagram
- Rs 50 million for Swat
Meanwhile, the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) in AJK confirmed that more than 700 stranded tourists were successfully rescued from Ratti Gali Lake after floods washed away a 1.5 km road. The operation, led by Rescue 1122, district administration, police, and Pakistan Army, lasted over eight hours and evacuated 98 vehicles and hundreds of people to safety.
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued an advisory forecasting more heavy rains between August 18 and 22 in:
- KP districts: Chitral, Swat, Dir, Abbottabad, Peshawar, Waziristan, Kohistan, and Malakand.
- GB regions: Hunza, Skardu, Astore, and Shigar.
- AJK areas: Muzaffarabad, Neelum Valley, and Bagh.
Officials have urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel and remain vigilant due to the risk of further flooding, landslides, and bridge collapses.
So far, 184 bodies have been recovered in Buner, where search operations continue. A flood emergency has been declared in multiple districts to accelerate rescue, relief, and rehabilitation efforts. Authorities warn that the death toll may rise further as dozens remain unaccounted for.
