GAZA CITY — Hamas has announced that it has accepted a new ceasefire proposal that could temporarily halt the nearly two-year-old war in Gaza. The deal includes a 60-day suspension of hostilities and the release of half of the remaining Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners.
The proposal, brokered by Egypt and Qatar, was finalized during high-level talks in Cairo. According to diplomatic sources, the agreement includes:
- A two-month halt to military operations in Gaza.
- A swap of about 10 Israeli hostages for Palestinian prisoners.
- A phased framework that could pave the way for a comprehensive peace deal.
Egypt, a key regional broker, has stepped up its role as Israel simultaneously threatened a major ground offensive on Gaza City that could displace about one million Palestinians from their homes.
However, Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu has rejected the partial agreements, insisting that Israel will end the war only if Hamas:
Releases all hostages at once.
- Completely disarms.
Accepts a demilitarized operation in Gaza.
Despite this stance, political analysts say the latest framework – part of which is based on a US-backed proposal – addresses many of Israel’s earlier objections.
The announcement came just a day after Israel’s biggest anti-war protests since the conflict began. More than 400,000 Israelis took to the streets across the country, with the largest demonstrations in Tel Aviv demanding both a ceasefire and the release of the hostages.
The proposal has been formally submitted to Israel but its acceptance is uncertain. While US President Donald Trump expressed support for Israel’s efforts to “defeat Hamas”, the scale of public protests reflects war fatigue and pressure on Netanyahu to compromise.
