US to Ban Palestinian President & Senior officials from UN General Assembly

Washington — The United States has announced it will block Palestinian Authority (PA) President Mahmoud Abbas and around 80 senior PA officials from attending the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) next month. The move, confirmed by a US State Department official to The Times of Israel, significantly escalates Washington’s pressure on Ramallah.

The State Department said on Friday that it is implementing a visa ban on Palestinian leaders over alleged violations of US law linked to the Oslo Accords and commitments to combat terrorism. While the initial announcement did not name individuals, officials later clarified that Abbas himself would be included in the restrictions.

According to US officials, the decision stems from Ramallah’s ongoing efforts to pursue “international lawfare campaigns” — including appeals to the International Criminal Court (ICC) and the International Court of Justice (ICJ) — and attempts to secure unilateral recognition of Palestinian statehood.

US authorities argue that such actions undermine the peace process framework set by the Oslo Accords, which emphasize negotiations rather than unilateral moves in international forums.

“The United States is committed to ensuring that parties adhere to agreements made in good faith,” a State Department spokesperson said, stressing that bypassing negotiations through international tribunals contravenes agreed principles.

The travel ban marks one of the sharpest diplomatic rebukes of Abbas in recent years, as the Palestinian leader has increasingly turned to international institutions to advance recognition of a Palestinian state in the absence of peace talks with Israel.

Observers say the decision could complicate already tense US-Palestinian relations and trigger backlash from Arab and Muslim-majority countries ahead of the UNGA
