Gaza City — The Palestinian group Hamas has confirmed the Martyrdom of its senior Gaza military commander, Mohammed Sinwar, months after Israel claimed he was killed in a targeted strike earlier this year.
In an official statement released Friday, Hamas shared photographs of Sinwar alongside other senior figures of the group, honoring them as “martyrs.” While the group acknowledged his death, it did not disclose details about when or how he was killed.
Mohammed Sinwar was the younger brother of Yahya Sinwar, the former political and military leader of Hamas in Gaza. Yahya was widely regarded as one of the masterminds of the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel, which triggered the ongoing conflict.

Yahya Sinwar was killed in combat in late 2024.

Following his death, Mohammed Sinwar rose to become Hamas’s de facto leader in Gaza.
Israel had targeted him in a May 2025 strike, later assessing that he had been killed, though Hamas had remained silent until now.
The Israeli military has described Sinwar as one of its most high-value targets, accusing him of directing cross-border attacks and coordinating Gaza’s armed resistance. Officials in Israel have not yet issued a fresh statement on Hamas’s confirmation but are expected to frame it as a major blow to Hamas’s command structure.
Analysts believe the confirmation of Sinwar’s death could:
- Further weaken Hamas’s leadership hierarchy in Gaza.
- Create internal challenges over succession and strategy.
- Affect the group’s ability to coordinate long-term military operations.
Despite losing both Yahya and Mohammed Sinwar, Hamas has vowed to continue its resistance against Israel, underscoring that its operations will not cease with the deaths of its senior leaders.
