Sanaa, Yemen — The Houthi movement announced on Saturday that Ahmed al-Rahawi, the prime minister of the Houthi-controlled government in Yemen, was killed in an Israeli airstrike on Sanaa along with several ministers.
According to the Houthis, al-Rahawi and other officials were attending a government workshop when the strike occurred on Thursday. The meeting was reportedly focused on reviewing the group’s activities and performance over the past year.
The Israeli military confirmed the operation, stating it had conducted a “precise strike on a Houthi terrorist regime military target” in the Yemeni capital.
Al-Rahawi had been serving as the head of the Houthi-led government since August 2024. His death marks the most significant loss of leadership for the group in recent months amid intensifying clashes with Israel.
The Houthis have launched multiple missiles and drones at Israel since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza, claiming their attacks are carried out in solidarity with the Palestinians. Most projectiles have been intercepted by Israeli defense systems, but the barrage has kept regional tensions high.
Earlier this week, Israeli strikes hit several parts of Sanaa, killing at least 10 people and injuring more than 100 others, according to the Houthi-run health ministry.
The Houthi offensive has also targeted Red Sea shipping lanes, disrupting international trade and prompting a US-led coalition, alongside Israel, to expand military operations against Houthi strongholds, including Sanaa and the key port city of Hodeidah.
In May, Israeli airstrikes rendered Sanaa’s airport inoperable, further isolating the Houthi-controlled north.
Earlier this year, the Trump administration announced a deal with the Houthis to halt airstrikes in exchange for ending their attacks on shipping. However, the group later clarified that the agreement did not cover operations against Israel or its allies.
