Mirpur (AJK) — Pakistan has joined fellow Commonwealth nations in endorsing a new five-year strategic plan (2025–2030) designed to accelerate prosperity, strengthen democratic values, and enhance resilience across the 56-member bloc.

The plan, approved at an extraordinary Board of Governors meeting on September 10, was unveiled by Commonwealth Secretary-General Hon. Shirley Botchwey, who emphasized that the Secretariat must evolve to meet the complex and interconnected challenges of today’s world.

The new direction will focus on three interrelated pillars with a cross-cutting emphasis on youth, women, and small states:

  1. Democratic Resilience – Strengthening human rights, good governance, the rule of law, and credible elections.
  2. Economic Resilience – Promoting inclusive trade, fair access to finance, and sustainable debt management.
  3. Environmental Resilience – Advancing climate action, ocean protection, and sustainable natural resource use.

To support these pillars, the Secretariat will leverage technology, partnerships, and reforms to improve program delivery. Key initiatives include expanding youth digital skills, STEM education for girls, and entrepreneurship opportunities.

Pakistan’s participation reflects its commitment to the Commonwealth Charter’s values and its dedication to working collectively on global issues such as climate change, inclusive economic growth, and governance reforms.

“The Commonwealth is needed more than ever, but we can only meet that need if we are willing to evolve,” Secretary-General Botchwey said, noting that the plan was designed to keep pace with global disruptions.

High Commissioner Titilupe Fanetupouvava’u Tu’ivakano of Tonga, Chair of the Board of Governors, praised the plan as a “big step forward,” particularly for small island states facing existential climate risks.

The Secretariat will now roll out detailed projects to translate the strategy into action. Secretary-General Botchwey is set to share the new plan with international partners, including at the Commonwealth Foreign Affairs Ministers Meeting during the UN General Assembly in New York later this month.

The plan underscores a renewed vision of a resilient, inclusive, and prosperous Commonwealth, directly benefiting the 2.7 billion citizens across member countries.
