Islamabad — Pakistan and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia have signed a historic Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement, marking a significant milestone in their longstanding partnership and shared commitment to regional peace, stability, and deterrence.

The announcement was made by Foreign Office Spokesperson Ambassador Shafqat Ali Khan during his weekly media briefing on Friday. The agreement was finalized on September 17 following official talks in Riyadh between Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif and His Royal Highness Crown Prince and Prime Minister Muhammad bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.

Ambassador Khan said the agreement underscores deep mutual trust, as both nations pledged that any aggression against one country would be treated as aggression against both. He added that the deal reflects nearly eight decades of strategic partnership, rooted in Islamic solidarity, shared values, and robust defence cooperation.

Prime Minister Sharif expressed gratitude for the Kingdom’s hospitality and conveyed warm wishes for the well-being of King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and the prosperity of the Saudi people. Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, in turn, extended his best wishes for Pakistan’s peace and development.

The Prime Minister’s visit coincided with the Emergency Arab-Islamic Summit in Doha on September 15, convened after Israeli airstrikes on Qatar. Leading Pakistan’s delegation — which included the Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign Minister, Defence Minister, Information Minister, and Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir — Prime Minister Sharif strongly condemned Israeli aggression.

He reaffirmed Pakistan’s unwavering support for the Palestinian cause and emphasized the need for Islamic unity to counter growing Israeli adventurism. Pakistan also pushed for an urgent debate at the UN Human Rights Council on Israel’s actions.

The joint communiqué adopted at the summit showcased the collective resolve of over 50 Arab and Islamic states to hold Israel accountable for repeated violations of international law and human rights.

On the sidelines, Prime Minister Sharif held bilateral meetings with leaders of Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Egypt, and Iran, further enhancing Pakistan’s diplomatic footprint in the region.

Ambassador Khan also highlighted parallel diplomatic engagements, including the President of Pakistan’s visit to China, where agreements on agriculture, vocational training, and environmental cooperation were signed. Additionally, Pakistan’s Deputy Prime Minister engaged in telephone discussions with his counterparts from Egypt, Germany, and the United States on regional and bilateral issues.

Concluding his remarks, Ambassador Khan reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening its historic ties with Saudi Arabia, China, and other allies, while maintaining principled support for peace, sovereignty, and the rights of oppressed peoples, particularly in Palestine and Kashmir.
