New York — French President Emmanuel Macron announced on Monday that France has officially recognized the State of Palestine, calling the move essential to preserving the two-state solution and advancing peace in the Middle East.
Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly, Macron emphasized that the recognition aligns with France’s longstanding commitment to peace and justice. Today, France recognizes the State of Palestine,” he declared.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres praised the announcement, stressing that Palestinian statehood is a fundamental right. “Without it, there can be no peace,” he said, while condemning both Hamas’s October 7 attacks and Israel’s ongoing collective punishment of civilians in Gaza. He also criticized the “creeping annexation” of the West Bank, labeling it “morally, legally, and politically intolerable.”
France’s recognition comes after similar steps by Britain, Canada, Australia, and Portugal. However, Germany and Italy opposed unilateral recognition, arguing it could weaken negotiations with Israel.
Israel and the United States boycotted the summit. Israeli officials warned they may annex parts of the occupied West Bank, while Washington dismissed the recognition as “performative.”
The recognition coincides with Israel’s intensified assault on Gaza and rising settler violence in the West Bank. Analysts say France’s decision, though symbolic, could reshape international momentum by rallying more nations to back Palestinian statehood and pressure Israel to return to negotiations.
