Washington — U.S. President Donald Trump is reviewing Russian President Vladimir Putin’s proposal to continue observing the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START) limits for an additional year after the treaty expires in February 2026, the White House confirmed Monday.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said Trump has been briefed and will address the proposal directly. “The president is aware of this offer extended by President Putin, and I’ll let him comment on it later. I think it sounds pretty good, but he wants to make some comments on that himself,” she stated.
Earlier, Putin told Russia’s Security Council that Moscow is prepared to voluntarily adhere to START’s restrictions — but only if the United States makes the same commitment.
The New START Treaty, signed in 2010 and extended in 2021, remains the last active nuclear arms control pact between Washington and Moscow. It limits the number of deployed nuclear warheads and strategic delivery systems on both sides.
Putin’s proposal comes at a time of heightened tensions between the two nuclear powers. Analysts warn that without a mutual agreement, the expiration of START could trigger a new arms race, undermining decades of progress on nuclear stability. Trump’s upcoming remarks are expected to outline U.S. policy on the future of arms control and strategic deterrence.
