New York — U.S. President Donald Trump has privately assured leaders of Arab and Muslim-majority nations that his administration will not allow Israel to annex the West Bank, according to diplomatic sources familiar with the talks.
The commitment was reportedly made during Trump’s high-level meeting on Tuesday with officials from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Egypt, Jordan, Turkey, Indonesia, and Pakistan on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.
Two sources — one present at the meeting and another briefed afterward — confirmed the remarks to The Times of Israel, echoing a similar account published by Politico.
According to the sources, Trump emphasized that U.S. policy would firmly oppose any Israeli annexation efforts in the West Bank, framing the pledge as part of his broader push to mediate the Middle East conflict and promote stability.
The U.S. president’s assurance comes at a time when Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government faces mounting international criticism for its handling of the Gaza war and expanding settlement activity in the occupied territories.
While Trump has strongly backed Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, he has also sought to reassure Arab and Muslim allies that Washington remains committed to preserving the possibility of a two-state solution.
During the UN meetings, Trump pressed regional leaders to support U.S.-backed proposals for post-war governance in Gaza, which include excluding Hamas and deploying a multinational Arab security force to stabilize the territory after an Israeli withdrawal.
The U.S. stance against annexation may ease some of the deep frustrations felt across the Middle East, where governments and citizens alike have condemned Israel’s Gaza operations and expressed concerns about permanent territorial expansion.
Diplomatic observers note, however, that Trump’s ability to restrain Netanyahu’s right-wing coalition on settlement expansion remains uncertain.
