New York — Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has urged urgent international intervention to stop Russia from triggering what he described as “the most destructive arms race in human history.” Addressing the United Nations General Assembly, Zelenskyy warned that the combination of drone warfare and artificial intelligence (AI) threatens to destabilize global security if unchecked.
Zelenskyy painted a stark picture of modern battlefields, describing how cheap drones now create deadly zones stretching for miles — devastation once imagined only after nuclear strikes. He argued that preventing Moscow’s expansion now would be far less costly than defending entire continents later.
“Stopping this war now, and with it the global arms race, is cheaper than building underground bunkers or protecting every port from terrorists,” Zelenskyy declared.
He warned that Russian drones already crossing into Poland prove that President Vladimir Putin seeks to expand the conflict across Europe.
Appealing beyond Western allies, Zelenskyy called on China and other nations to resist Russia’s war strategy. He emphasized that in today’s world, “only friends and weapons” offer protection, not international law or UN resolutions.
He also accused countries that continue to trade with Moscow of funding war crimes, prolonging the captivity of prisoners, abducted children, and hostages.
Highlighting threats beyond Ukraine, Zelenskyy warned that Russia is attempting to manipulate Moldova’s parliamentary elections with hundreds of millions of euros in funding aimed at reversing its path toward the European Union. Moldova’s Prime Minister Dorin Recean echoed these concerns, accusing Moscow of trying to “take power” in the country.
The address followed U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent comments describing Russia’s military as “fighting aimlessly” — a shift from his previously warmer rhetoric toward Moscow.
The Kremlin dismissed Trump’s remarks, with spokesman Dmitry Peskov attributing them to Trump’s meeting with Zelenskyy in New York. Former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev mocked Trump’s stance, predicting he would soon pressure Kyiv into surrender.
Meanwhile, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen reaffirmed that Europe will completely end reliance on Russian fossil fuels by 2027. The EU is preparing new sanctions targeting 118 vessels in Russia’s “shadow fleet,” used to bypass oil price caps.
However, divisions persist as Hungary and Slovakia resist phasing out Russian oil imports. EU diplomats are expected to deliberate further in the coming days.
