Pakistan has called on the global community, particularly developing countries, to push for the implementation of commitments made in the UN’s recently adopted *Pact for the Future*, stressing that meaningful transformation will only be achieved through decisive action.
During a discussion on global governance and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Munir Akram, acknowledged that the Pact is “not perfect,” and noted that some commitments from previous agreements, including the SDG declaration, were not fully realized.
Ambassador Akram emphasized the importance of reforming the international financial system, re-channeling 50% of Special Drawing Rights (SDRs) to developing countries, and improving access to concessional lending. He also stressed the need to address sovereign debt issues and create a fair international tax framework.
On trade, the Pakistani envoy expressed dissatisfaction, stating that it must once again serve as a key driver for development, warning against environmental protectionism, and calling for the revitalization of the WTO’s dispute settlement mechanism.
Ambassador Akram also underlined the significance of bridging the global digital divide, advocating for equitable data governance and urging cooperation to harness the potential of artificial intelligence (AI). He proposed establishing an international scientific panel on AI, an annual dialogue on AI governance, and a dedicated AI capacity-building fund.
“Access to cutting-edge technologies is vital for the progress of developing countries,” Akram concluded, calling for investment in technological advancements to ensure these nations are not left behind.
