At the Paris Paralympics, Iranian blind athlete Hajer Sefarzadeh has made history by winning a silver medal, becoming the first blind woman athlete from Iran to achieve this feat.
According to Iranian news agency IRNA, Sefarzadeh excelled in the 400-meter race, securing a silver medal, while she finished fourth in the 200-meter event, making her one of the most successful athletes in Iran’s Paralympic team.
Sefarzadeh is only the second blind athlete from Iran to make such a significant mark in the Paralympics. In an interview, she shared insights about her life and passion for sports.
She described her first trip to the Paralympics in Paris as stressful, but she managed to control her nerves effectively. Initially, she was projected to finish no higher than fourth place, but she surprised many by securing the second position.
Sefarzadeh noted that her main competitor, hailing from Cuba, had consistently dominated the 400-meter race at the London 2012 Paralympics, winning gold medals four times in a row.
Having previously won a gold medal at the Hangzhou Para Asian Games, Sefarzadeh expressed her determination to win gold at the next Paralympics. She felt joy in bringing happiness to her fellow countrymen with her silver medal victory.
Sefarzadeh also mentioned receiving various titles on social media, including “Daughter of Iran Riding the Winds,” but stated that she is not overly concerned with the accolades.
Her passion for sports began in childhood, and she trained in karate. Whenever she had time, she practiced running and horseback riding. Additionally, Sefarzadeh expressed an interest in football, supporting the Iranian clubs Sepahan and Esteghlal.
