President Claudia Sheinbaum, in her inaugural address, committed to steering Mexico away from its fossil fuel dependency and boosting renewable energy as a core part of her administration’s agenda. Speaking in Mexico City’s Zocalo, she pledged to achieve a 45% share of renewable sources in the country’s electricity mix by 2030.
This announcement signals a sharp turn from former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s focus on fossil fuels, which included a $20 billion investment in a new oil refinery and a freeze on renewable energy projects. Sheinbaum described an “ambitious energy transition program” that will focus on reducing greenhouse gases and combating climate change.
Though Sheinbaum expressed strong support for renewables, she also reiterated her commitment to strengthening the Federal Electricity Commission and Pemex, which remain largely reliant on fossil fuels. This suggests her administration will aim to balance a renewable push with the existing energy infrastructure as Mexico navigates its path to a more sustainable future.
