Income Tax Filing Deadline Not to Be Extended

The government has announced that it will not extend the deadline for filing income tax returns. Actions against non-filers are slated to begin on November 1.

Chairman of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), Rashid Langrial, emphasized Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s clear directive to take a hardline approach against tax evaders. He reported a significant increase in compliance, with the number of individuals submitting income tax returns surging to 4 million, compared to just 1.4 million in the previous year.

The FBR revealed that between July 1 and October 8, 2024, it registered 942,000 new tax filers. As of October 8, over 4.078 million returns have been filed. In the same timeframe last year, only 2.067 million returns were submitted, reflecting an impressive increase of 2.011 million early filings this year.

FBR officials noted that this fiscal year, more than 106 billion PKR in taxes have been collected alongside the returns. Last year, the total number of filed returns reached 6.354 million. The recent data shows that 942,000 new filers have registered since July 1, a significant rise compared to approximately 400,000 new registrations during the same period last year.
