United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has issued a stark warning, stating that nuclear weapons remain a grave threat to global security.
statement released following the announcement of the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize, awarded to the Japanese organization “Nihon Hidankyo,” Guterres praised the group, which consists of survivors of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings. He commended their persistent advocacy against nuclear arms, highlighting the importance of their work.
“Despite the passing of decades, nuclear weapons still pose a significant danger to humanity,” Guterres said. “Leaders across the world must understand that these weapons offer no real security, only the promise of unparalleled devastation.”
The UN Chief stressed that complete nuclear disarmament remains the only solution to the threat. “Global peace can only be achieved by the full elimination of nuclear weapons,” he added, urging nations to take concrete steps toward this goal.
Guterres’ message comes at a time of heightened nuclear rhetoric and tensions worldwide, further underscoring the need for renewed efforts in disarmament and dialogue.
