The U.N. Security Council expressed “strong concern” on Monday following Israeli fire that wounded U.N. peacekeepers in southern Lebanon, amid escalating clashes in the region. This is the Council’s first statement since Israel began targeting U.N. positions known as UNIFIL last week, actions that have sparked international condemnation.
U.N. peacekeeping chief Jean-Pierre Lacroix announced that Secretary-General António Guterres has assured that peacekeepers will remain in their designated areas, despite Israel’s request for them to move 5 kilometers (3 miles) north during its ground invasion in Lebanon. The Security Council emphasized the critical role of UNIFIL in maintaining security in the region.
