A British Muslim police officer, Ruby Begum, has been dismissed from the Metropolitan Police after being found guilty of posting anti-Semitic and anti-non-Muslim remarks on social media. The decision to terminate her employment was based on offensive tweets made nearly a decade ago.
Ruby Begum, a 29-year-old officer, had reportedly tweeted statements that were deemed “hate-filled and discriminatory,” including remarks targeting Jewish communities. One of her posts declared, “Hell is waiting for you,” in reference to Jews. Additionally, it was reported that between 2013 and 2019, she made over 25,000 posts that were controversial, sparking outrage among Zionist groups.
Ruby Begum became widely known in 2020 after a photograph of her confronting anti-lockdown protestors went viral. However, in 2021, her earlier tweets surfaced, leading to an investigation by a disciplinary panel. The panel concluded that her comments were incompatible with the standards expected of a police officer, branding them as “hateful and biased.”
Despite acknowledging her past tweets, Ruby Begum argued that her actions were a case of “misconduct” rather than grounds for dismissal. She expressed that a warning would have been a more appropriate measure. According to British media, Ruby joined the police force as a full-time officer in 2016.
During the hearing, Begum admitted to writing the tweets but argued that her actions warranted a warning rather than outright dismissal. She characterized her posts as “misconduct” rather than deliberate hate speech. Despite her defense, the panel maintained that her comments had violated the force’s ethical standards.
