The Athletics Federation of Pakistan has confirmed the sad news of Captain Muhammad Younis’ passing, a legendary figure in Pakistan’s sports history. Renowned for his prowess in middle-distance running, Younis claimed 27 gold medals internationally for Pakistan, excelling in the 800m and 1500m events. His historic gold in the 1500m at the 1974 Asian Games in Iran remains a proud achievement for the nation.
In addition to his gold medal, Younis also secured silver at the 1970 and 1978 Asian Games and made his mark in the 1973 Asian Track and Field Championships with one gold and one silver. Notably, several of his national records from the 1970s still stand; his 1500m record from 1970, as well as his 3000m and 5000m records, remain unbroken by any Pakistani athlete.
Younis’ career was cut short by an unfortunate accident in 1979. However, his legacy was formally recognized in 1991 when he was awarded the prestigious Pride of Performance by the Government of Pakistan. His contributions to Pakistani athletics will be remembered as an inspiration to future generations.
