KABUL — The foreign ministers of Afghanistan, Pakistan, and China will convene in Kabul on August 20 for high-level trilateral discussions aimed at enhancing regional security and economic cooperation.
According to diplomatic insiders, the talks will focus on:
- Counter terrorism cooperation to address cross-border threats and regional instability.
- Expansion of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) to include Afghanistan, boosting trade connectivity across South and Central Asia.
Afghanistan’s potential inclusion in CPEC is seen as a move that could strengthen Beijing’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) influence while providing Kabul with critical infrastructure and economic opportunities.
Earlier this month, Muttaqi was scheduled to visit Pakistan on August 5, but the trip was canceled. While both governments initially cited “technical reasons,” diplomatic sources revealed that the UN Security Council denied travel permission, as Muttaqi remains on the UN sanctions list for members of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA).
Following the Kabul talks, Wang Yi is expected to travel to Pakistan for bilateral meetings with Islamabad’s leadership. The visit underscores China’s commitment to strengthening regional alliances and advancing economic integration under the BRI framework.
