Kabul: A powerful earthquake in Afghanistan has killed at least 800 people and left more than 2,800 injured, with officials warning that the toll may rise as rescuers struggle to reach remote mountainous areas. The Taliban government has urgently appealed to the international community for humanitarian assistance.
The magnitude 6 earthquake struck just after midnight at a shallow depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles), devastating homes in the eastern provinces of Kunar and Nangarhar. Tremors triggered widespread panic, forcing thousands to spend the night outdoors in fear of aftershocks.
Authorities said rescue teams face severe challenges due to impassable mountain roads and harsh weather conditions. Helicopters have been deployed to airlift the injured to hospitals, but the extent of the damage in remote villages remains unclear.
Sharafat Zaman, spokesperson for the Afghan Health Ministry, urged immediate international aid, stating:
> “We need it because here lots of people lost their lives and houses.”
The disaster adds to Afghanistan’s already dire humanitarian situation. Since the Taliban takeover in 2021, the country has faced:
* Sharp declines in foreign aid
* Economic collapse and food insecurity
* Mass deportations of Afghans from neighboring countries
Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid confirmed that at least 812 lives have been lost, with thousands injured and widespread destruction reported.
The Taliban administration has appealed to the United Nations, aid agencies, and foreign governments to step in with urgent relief, including medical supplies, tents, and food assistance.
