Aga Khan V Prince Rahim Al-Hussaini joined presidents, ministers, and delegates from over 60 countries at the United Nations Oceans Conference, hosted by French President Emmanuel Macron. Themed “Accelerating action and mobilizing all actors to conserve and sustainably use the ocean,” the summit focused on implementing Sustainable Development Goal 14, which centers on ocean preservation and the responsible use of marine resources.
During the high-level gathering, Aga Khan V Prince Rahim Al-Hussaini emphasized the collective responsibility to safeguard marine environments, noting, “Our institutions are helping to ensure the protection of these precious natural resources.
The Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN), a Knowledge Partner of UNOC 2025, presented its Indian Ocean Coastal Regeneration Initiative. This major environmental program supports ecosystem restoration and economic resilience in six countries: Pakistan, India, Kenya, Madagascar, Mozambique, and Tanzania.
Drawing on decades of experience, AKDN aims to restore over 100,000 hectares of coastal land and improve livelihoods for millions living along vulnerable shorelines. The initiative exemplifies sustainable development through community-led conservation and innovation.
Prince Hussain Aga Khan, a dedicated environmentalist, contributed to the conference through his marine photography exhibition titled Fragile Ocean. His striking underwater images, displayed at the event, reflect the beauty and vulnerability of ocean life affected by climate change, plastic pollution, and industrial exploitation.
French First Lady Brigitte Macron, UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay, Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, and Overseas Minister Manuel Valls also joined the conference, reaffirming France’s leadership in environmental diplomacy.
UNOC 2025 brought together international governments, NGOs, financial institutions, civil society, and academia to mobilize solutions for ocean conservation.
