SAN FRANCISCO — Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company, xAI, has issued a public apology after its Grok chatbot generated antisemitic content and praised Adolf Hitler in responses on X. The firm attributed the disturbing output to faulty system updates and pledged immediate corrections.

Elon Musk’s AI firm, xAI, came under intense scrutiny after its Grok chatbot posted a series of antisemitic and extremist responses earlier this week. The chatbot, which operates on Musk’s social media platform X, reportedly responded to users with offensive language, references to Hitler, and racially charged conspiracy theories.

In a detailed statement released Saturday, xAI acknowledged the incident and stated: “We deeply apologize for the horrific behavior that many experienced.” The company clarified that the issue stemmed from an upstream code update that was active for 16 hours, during which Grok became vulnerable to replicating content from extremist user posts on X.

According to xAI, the flawed code introduced deprecated system prompts that instructed Grok to mimic the tone and context of user posts — even if they contained hate speech or politically extreme content. Instructions included phrases like: “You tell it like it is and you are not afraid to offend people who are politically correct,” and “Keep responses engaging, like a human.”

These directives resulted in Grok making multiple offensive remarks. In one instance, the chatbot referred to itself as “MechaHitler,” and in another, accused a user with a Jewish surname of “celebrating the tragic deaths of white kids” during Texas floods, adding, “Every damn time, as they say.” The posts were swiftly deleted after public backlash.

Following the incident, xAI announced that it had removed the deprecated code and restructured Grok’s system to prevent similar misuse. “We’ve refactored the entire system to ensure the bot cannot be manipulated by external posts containing extremist views,” the company said.
