ISLAMABAD — The Faculty Board of Sciences at Allama Iqbal Open University (AIOU) has approved a comprehensive set of academic reforms aimed at modernizing educational programs and aligning them with international scientific standards.

Chaired by Professor Dr. Sher Muhammad, Dean of the Faculty of Sciences, the 29th board meeting was held to review, revise, and advance the faculty’s academic strategy. Senior faculty members, departmental heads, and external education experts participated in the high-level session.

During the meeting, the board discussed key issues including research advancement, teaching excellence, and curriculum design. Dr. Sher Muhammad highlighted the urgent need to adopt international best practices in education and scientific research to meet evolving global trends.

> “Modern science education requires continuous innovation and alignment with global academic practices,” he said.

The board approved schemes of study for various academic levels, including short courses, associate degrees, BS, MPhil, PhD, and other postgraduate programs

Dr. Zahid Majid, Director of Academic Planning and Course Production, highlighted the importance of faculty readiness, stating that no program should be launched without fully qualified instructors in place. He also reiterated that all academic plans must comply with the Higher Education Commission (HEC) guidelines and the internal policies of AIOU.

“Academic excellence begins with qualified faculty and policy alignment. Every scheme of study must reflect HEC standards,” he noted.

These reforms are being rolled out under the leadership of Vice Chancellor Professor Dr. Nasir Mahmood, who has mandated regular faculty board meetings across all departments. The aim is to ensure cross-faculty coordination, curriculum relevance, and consistency in quality assurance and academic governance.

AIOU is making dedicated efforts to upgrade its research and academic systems in line with both national priorities and international benchmarks, reinforcing its status as a leader in open and distance learning in Pakistan.
