Air India Plane Crash in Ahmedabad Kills Nearly 300, British National Survives

A tragic air disaster struck Ahmedabad on June 12, as Air India Flight AI171 crashed shortly after takeoff, killing 294 people including passengers and civilians on the ground. In a remarkable twist, a British-Indian national was the sole survivor of the crash, which is now under international investigation.

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner, bound for London Gatwick, plunged into a nearby doctors’ hostel just minutes after departure. The collision resulted in a massive fireball that engulfed the area, leaving extensive devastation. The crash claimed 242 lives onboard and 52 others on the ground, making it one of India’s deadliest aviation incidents in recent years.

Officials confirmed that 40-year-old Vishwash Kumar Ramesh, a dual citizen of the UK and India, miraculously survived. He reportedly crawled from the burning wreckage with minor injuries and was rushed to a local hospital, where he remains in stable condition.

Among the deceased were 169 Indian nationals, 53 British citizens, seven Portuguese, and one Canadian. Several medical students in the doctors’ hostel also perished in the explosion. Authorities are using DNA testing to identify many of the bodies due to the extent of the fire damage.

India’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) are investigating. Boeing and Air India have pledged full cooperation as authorities seek to uncover the cause of the disaster — the first fatal crash involving a Boeing 787.

Leaders across the world, including Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and King Charles, expressed their condolences. Emergency crews continued to search the crash site late into the night, with grief and shock reverberating around the globe.
